Today’s smartphones hold their charge better than ever before. However, the thinness of the devices limits the size of their battery. Aside from cramming in a larger battery that makes the entire phone bigger and heavier, there is another way for manufacturers to improve the overall battery performance of their devices—fast charging.
Modern fast charging technology has improved dramatically in the past few years. Much of that innovation can be traced back to Xiaomi. Now, the smartphone manufacturer has unveiled its latest charging innovation.
On Sunday, Xiaomi showed off its 80W Mi Wireless Charging Technology. It is reportedly able to charge a 4,000 mAh battery to 100 percent in just 19 minutes. That is an impressive feat by any metric but especially so for a wireless charger. Of course, it remains unknown how the charging technology holds up in the real world.
Xiaomi might not be the most popular smartphone brand on the market, but it has a sizeable following—especially internationally. It often outfits its phones with the best charging tech available. Since it is usually responsible for designing that tech, it is easy to ensure that the devices support it.
The company’s latest innovation, 80W wireless charging, is a big leap forward from the 30W technology it introduced last year.
Charging a phone to full capacity isn’t the only thing that the new tech accomplishes. Xiaomi says that it can charge a 4,000 mAh battery to 10 percent in just one minute. That’s a lifesaver for those who need a bit of juice on the way out the door. It is also capable of charging a device to 50 percent in just eight minutes. That’s far faster than the 30W tech, which performed the same feat in 25 minutes.
In a press release, Xiaomi said, “The introduction of 80W Mi Wireless Charging Technology is expected to set a new benchmark not only in the area of wireless charging but in charging as a whole. Xiaomi has been spearheading this trend by recognizing the importance of battery life and faster charging for the future development of smartphones.”
Will it Hold Up?
It’s worth noting that Xiaomi is simply beating its own record when it comes to the fastest wireless charging on a smartphone. The Mi 10 Ultra and its 4,500 mAh battery can be fully charged in just 40 minutes thanks to Xiaomi’s 50W technology.
While the new 80W tech is incredible, Xiaomi hasn’t yet said when a device featuring it will ship. It could be a year or more until that happens. Sadly for U.S. consumers, that device probably won’t make it past the Chinese market.
They have that in common with the trend of fast wireless charging. Most U.S. devices haven’t yet benefitted from the tech. For instance, the OnePlus 8 Pro features a 30W charger, making it the fastest option available right now. The MagSafe chargers recently released by Apple only deliver 15W to the iPhone 12.
It will be interesting to see how fast Xiaomi’s new 80W tech makes its way into a device and into the American market.
