Marvel fans might not have seen the last of Mark Ruffalo’s Incredible Hulk just yet. After the green giant played a key role in stopping Thanos during “Avengers: Endgame,” it appeared that the character’s time in the MCU had been played out. Now, according to rumors and some statements by actor Mark Ruffalo, there might be hope for another Hulk appearance.
This time, he wouldn’t be taking on Thanos. Instead, he’d go giant fist to claw with none other than Wolverine. While the prospect is still very much a rumor, MCU fans are already getting excited about the possibilities that would arise from such a crossover.
Comic-Con Strikes Again
Some of the most interesting developments in the geek entertainment world often occur, unsurprisingly, at Comic-Con. That makes a lot of sense considering that key actors and leading writers/directors are in attendance together.
At the recent Tokyo Comic-Con, Ruffalo reportedly spoke with MCU big-shot Kevin Feige about the Hulk-Wolverine crossover.
He said, “Kevin Feige just asked me last week if I had any more ideas or stories for the Hulk. And I said ‘Yeah, I think there’s still some stories to tell.’ And he said, ‘Well why don’t you come in and tell me about them and we’ll see if we can find a place for you in the Marvel universe?’”
That quote alone has fans buzzing. Ruffalo stated that his big idea is a Hulk versus Wolverine film that pits the two resilient heroes against each other. Though it isn’t clear how (or why) this would occur, it certainly makes for an interesting matchup.
Putting Hopes in Check
As of now, it’s important to remember that Disney already has a huge slate of Marvel projects lined up. Phase four of the MCU extends all the way through 2021 and includes “The Eternals,” a new “Dr. Strange,” and also a new “Thor.” Then, phase five reaches into and possibly beyond 2022. It will include films like “Black Panther 2,” “Guardians of The Galaxy Vol. 3,” “Captain Marvel 2,” and a rumored “Fantastic Four” remake.
Interestingly enough, thanks to the merger between Disney and Fox, an “X-Men” movie firmly in play. Whether or not it will be part of phase five remains to be seen. However, it isn’t too outlandish to imagine Hulk and Wolverine crossing paths sometime in the future.
Still, such a film likely wouldn’t include the fan-favorite Wolverine played by Hugh Jackman. He previously said that he isn’t interested in reprising the role. Nonetheless, seeing the two timeless characters battle it out would certainly be a fun time.
For now, it’s best for fans to temper their expectations. Although there is a good chance that Ruffalo’s pitch could be picked up by the MCU, there is no guarantee. Even if it is turned into a movie, it likely won’t release until several years down the road. Yet, it is comforting to know that Feige is looking for ways to take one of the original Avengers into the next phases of the MCU.
