Dinosaur fans and Jeff Goldblum enthusiasts got a taste of what Earth looks like following the shocking events of “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.”

On Monday, a new short film titled “Jurassic World: Battle at Big Rock” was quietly released. Of course, fans didn’t keep it quiet for long. With dinosaurs roaming free across the world, there are plenty of new problems to be faced. Although there is still a long wait until the third installment of the “Jurassic World” franchise, the newest teaser sets the stage for what’s to come and dramatically alters its world forever.

The eight-minute film opens on a calm scene of what appears to be a campground in Big Rock National Park where a family is enjoying some time in the outdoors. Well, in their trailer at least. It takes place a year after the events of “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom” when dinosaurs escape into the wild en masse.

Things get going when they look outside and notice that no one is there. Seconds later, a massive Nasutoceratops (think Triceratops meets Texas longhorn) appears to rummage through the campsite for food like a prehistoric bear. Fans get a heart-warming moment as a baby Nasutoceratops frolics on screen with its mother.

Of course, “Jurassic World” isn’t a feel-good franchise. From the woods emerges a massive Allosaurus looking for an easy snack. The family watches in horror while the mother and another massive Nasutoceratops drive the carnivore off and escape into the forest. Unfortunately, the disturbance causes the family’s baby to start crying, attracting the dinosaur.

They helplessly try to battle the creature as it ravishes their camper. Just as all seems lost and the Allosaurus is getting ready for the meal he was searching for, the family’s young daughter shoots it in the eye with a crossbow. Both the family and fans are left to catch their breath at the film’s conclusion as the Allosaurus retreats.

A New Direction

While the trailer-smashing, heart-pounding action of the short film stands out, what might be more meaningful are the credits. That understandably sounds weird considering this isn’t part of the Marvel universe.

Even so, “Battle at Big Rock” offers a glimpse at what the franchise will look like when the next feature film hits theaters. Interspersed throughout the credits are scenes of how dinosaurs are affecting the world. From Stegosauruses blocking the road to Pterodactyls snatching wedding doves out of the air, humans are learning to deal with a new reality.

This inevitably sets the stage for “Jurassic World 3” as society at large must navigate through this crisis. Ultimately, the entire “Jurassic Park” and “Jurassic World” franchise has been building to this point since its beginning. It was only a matter of time until dinosaurs escaped Isla Nublar into the wild and now it is the time of reckoning.

Though the next movie might be a long way off, at least fans have this teaser to enjoy until then.
