When most people think of augmented reality (AR) they think of it as something visual. After all, it grew in popularity thanks to sight-based applications like Snapchat filters and mobile games. However, there is also a technology known as audio-based AR. This allows users to hear something in 360-degree, immersive quality.
On Tuesday, headphone maker Bose launched a “Star Wars” themed audio AR experience that’s just in time for the new “Rise of Skywalker” film this December. The experience can be accessed with any high-end pair of Bose headphones and is a pleasure to enjoy from start to finish.
The Audio Awakens
The audio AR experience is available in the official “Star Wars” mobile app. It is free to download from both the App Store and the Google Play Store. Users will also need some specific headphones to get started. Bose’s Headphones 700, QuietComfort 35 II, or Bose Frames can all unlock the immersive experience.
Fortunately, these are some of the most popular headphones on the market today. Once inside the “Star Wars” app, users can launch the Bose AR experience to get started. It follows the path of Luke’s blue lightsaber as it begins with Anakin then goes to Luke before eventually ending up with Rey in the newest trilogy.
The experience includes scenes from the classic “A New Hope” as Luke learns to use a lightsaber. It also features the iconic battle between Rey and Kylo Ren during “The Force Awakens.”
The AR-enabled Bose products listed above are able to sense where a user is looking and positioned in space. They also track movement and adjust the audio experience accordingly. Ultimately, this provides the illusion that you’re standing right in the middle of the action.
Though audio AR isn’t quite as immersive as visual AR or virtual reality (VR) it is still quite engaging. I found myself able to picture these timeless scenes in a totally new way. Without the visual effects, my imagination did the job of creating a “Star Wars” experience unlike anything seen on-screen. As someone who has memorized every part of these iconic scenes, the Bose AR experience revealed things that I’ve never before noticed.
Special Edition Release
Apparently there are a lot of “Star Wars” fans working at Bose. Not only is the company celebrating “The Rise of Skywalker” with the audio AR experience, it is also releasing a special edition pair of Quiet-Comfort 35 II headphones to commemorate the end of the Skywalker era.
Like Samsung’s Kylo Ren-inspired Galaxy Note S10+, these headphones are inspired by the dark side. One half is dipped in black and bears a Sith insignia while the other features a bright red color and black accents.
The special edition headphones will retail for $400 on Bose’s website. Supplies are expected to go pretty quickly leading up to the release of the movie and stock is already running low. With the QC 35 II’s top-notch noise cancellation and stellar audio quality, one thing is clear—these are the headphones you’re looking for.
They are also perfect for enjoying the new audio AR experience.
