Mobile gamers know that a phone’s processor can make or break their performance. While Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 865 chips are already very impressive, they aren’t specifically designed for gaming. That’s why the chipmaker is rolling out an upgraded version of its latest mobile processors that is perfect for mobile gaming and AI applications.

The Snapdragon 865 Plus promises to boost performance by nearly 10 percent over the standard 865 model. It also has better Wi-Fi connectivity features that support faster internet speeds.

Upgrading a Flagship

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 865 processor is the company’s flagship mobile chip. It is found in premium phones like the Samsung Galaxy S20 lineup, OnePlus’ 8 and 8 Pro, the LG V60 ThinQ 5G, and many others.

It is a fantastic processor that delivers exceptional performance for most users. Mobile gamers, however, need a little bit more.

The new Snapdragon 865 Plus features several upgrades over the standard model that enhance its performance. Most notable is a 3.1GHz boosted clock speed from the Kryo 585 CPU. That’s a 10 percent increase over the standard 865.

The chip’s Adreno 650 GPU also offers 10 percent faster graphics rendering. That should deliver noticeable improvements for those running games with intense resource demands.

Another noteworthy upgrade to the Snapdragon 865 Plus is its newly added compatibility with Qualcomm’s FastConnect 6900 connectivity suite. This enables Wi-Fi download speeds of up to 3.6 Gbps. This is possible because the chip takes advantage of Wi-Fi 6E, a new connectivity spectrum that is less congested than the typical 2.4 and 5GHz spectrums. Qualcomm says that this will help phones with the Snapdragon 865 operate smoothly and quickly even in areas where a lot of devices are connected simultaneously.

When Will Phones with the Snapdragon 865 Plus Arrive?

The Snapdragon 865 Plus is similar to last year’s 855 Plus model. It also offered gaming-focused upgrades to the CPU and GPU. Accordingly, that chip mainly showed up in Android phones specifically designed for gaming.

The Asus ROG Phone II, the Nubia Red Magic 3, and the Black Shark 2 Pro are a few of the more noteworthy devices. Though, the Snapdragon 855 Plus was also featured in the OnePlus 7T Pro.

As of now, it appears that the new Snapdragon 865 Plus will also be a gaming-focused chip. Qualcomm’s press release notes that it will appear in Asus’ ROG Phone III and Lenovo’s new Legion branded mobile devices.

Those looking to get their hands on a phone containing Qualcomm’s latest chip can’t do so right away. The first commercial gadgets with the Snapdragon 865 Plus won’t arrive until the third quarter of 2020. Sadly, that means the Galaxy Note 20, which is likely to be announced at a virtual Samsung Unpacked event next month, won’t feature the powerhouse processor.

Nonetheless, it is a welcome addition to the family of devices that mobile gamers turn to when they need the best performance on the market.
